Nicknamed the "Balkans' Colorado", Osum Canyon unfolds 26 km of limestone gorges near Çorovoda, combining rafting, local legends and hiking.

Nicknamed the "Balkans' Colorado" or the "Albania's Grand Canyon of Colorado", Osum Canyon (Kanioni i Osumit) cuts through the limestone of the Skrapar region for approximately 26 kilometres in the south of the country. Near Çorovoda, it combines geological landscapes, local legends and outdoor activities, and is one of the most sought-after natural excursions departing from Berat.

Why visit Osum Canyon

The site stands out for the narrowness of its gorges, whose width ranges between 1.5 metres and 35 metres depending on the passages, and for the formations carved into the rock by the Osum river. Several sections bear evocative names: the "Devil's Gate", the "Waterfall of Love", the "Crocodile's Head", the "Cathedral" and the "Eye". The interest of the place lies as much in this relief as in the possible activities (rafting, swimming, hiking) and in the richness of the oral traditions attached to it.

History and Legends

The canyon formed 2 to 3 million years ago through the erosion of limestone by the action of the Osum river. A geological hypothesis suggests that the river initially flowed underground: the progressive collapse of caverns would have freed the riverbed into the open air, which would explain the presence of caves and underground passages along the course.

The Legend of the "Bride's Hole"

A young woman forced into an arranged marriage fled the wedding procession and pleaded with a canyon rock to shelter her. The rock face supposedly split to hide her. The place has since been considered sacred by women seeking fertility, who visit it to make a wish.

Saint Abaz Ali

Near the hamlet of Dores, limestone concretions evoke the imprint of a bat and a horse. Local tradition attributes them to Saint Abaz Ali, who came from Karbala to Mount Tomor on a white horse. He remains venerated by Bektashi devotees who visit the place for prayer.

What to See and Do

Rafting and River Descent

The Osum river offers Class II rapids, accessible to both beginners and experienced practitioners under the guidance of local guides. Conditions are optimal in spring, during snowmelt, when the water level is higher. Equipment (wetsuit, life jacket, helmet) is provided by operators. Kayaking and canoeing are also available on certain sections.

Swimming and Mud Baths

Several designated areas allow for swimming, particularly near the canyon entrance where a small beach provides access to the river. Clay mud present on the banks is used locally as a body mask; it is traditionally credited with dermatological properties. Small waterfalls formed along the rapids offer a natural massage effect when positioned beneath the cascade.

Hiking and Viewpoints

Trails follow the canyon rim and offer views of the river's meanders from the cliffs. Some routes lead to caves or cascades below. Plan half a day to a full day depending on the chosen loop; a guide is helpful for the less marked sections.

Wildlife and Flora

The banks are covered with Mediterranean shrubs, pine forests, nectarine trees and heather. In spring, the slopes are blanketed with wildflowers. The sky is frequented by eagles, falcons and other raptors; the more remote areas shelter foxes, and more rarely wolves according to local accounts. Spring and autumn are the best periods for birdwatching, with the passage of migratory species.

Practical Information

Site entry is free. Rafting excursions and hiking guides can be booked in Berat or directly with providers in Çorovoda. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, water and a swimsuit if you plan to swim. Mobile coverage is limited in the gorges.

When to Visit

Spring (April-June) remains the most favourable season: water levels are high for rafting, vegetation is lush and temperatures remain moderate. Summer allows for swimming but the river level drops, making the descent less technical. Autumn offers striking colours on the surrounding vegetation. Winter should be avoided due to cold temperatures and sometimes difficult access.

How to Get There

The canyon is accessible from Berat in 1 to 2 hours by road, via shared minibus (furgon), taxi or rental vehicle. A full-day organised excursion remains the easiest option if you don't have a car. The road from Çorovoda passes through several villages and points of interest, including the Zabërzan footbridge and Blazënckë bridge.

What to See Nearby

The Skrapar region lends itself to a multi-day circuit. The villages of Lapa, Cerenisht, Bogovë and Poliçan allow you to observe Albanian rural life and connect the canyon to other sites. One to two hours' drive away, Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site nicknamed "the city of a thousand windows", deserves a stop for its Ottoman architecture and its fortified castle. Further southeast, the Bredhi i Hotoves National Park extends the discovery of the country's natural landscapes.
