Theth
Nestled in the Albanian Alps, Theth combines mythical trekking, an isolated stone church, Blue Eye and mountain hospitality. Practical guide to get there.
The mountain backdrop in the Albanian Alps creates a striking first impression among newcomers. A trip to Theth holds thrilling surprises, whether during a hiking expedition from Valbona or a driving excursion over the Shkodra passes. The village nestles in a valley, cradled by slate-grey peaks within the Theth National Park, where breathtaking landscapes beckon adventure.
History of Theth
Established in Shkodra County in northern Albania, Theth became an integral part of the municipality following the 2015 local government reform and was designated a protected historical center. The village lies at the heart of Theth National Park, renowned for its natural beauty.
By tradition, the local community shares a common ancestor (Ded Nika). The first families settled in Theth over three centuries ago to preserve their Catholic faith. During her visit to the region in the early 20th century, Edith Durham described the place as unique in the world for its desire for isolation.
Theth Today
The Theth valley rests in an amphitheater of mountains rising above 2,500 meters, within the heart of the Albanian Alps. Its location and environment enable tourism in Theth throughout the year. Traditional houses provide accommodation, while the culinary scene offers local and international recipes. Immigrant populations have brought contemporary culture to this welcoming, though isolated, region. Beyond staying with locals, camping is available for nature enthusiasts.
A panorama of Theth village
Ancient architecture and urban layouts testify to local development in Theth's historical center. Older buildings dominate much of the village, served by a typical road network. Among them stand important cultural monuments, such as the Dukagjin Ethnographic Museum, the Tower of Isolation, the house of Lulash Keci, and the Kulla of Nikoll Zef Koceku. Beyond these ancient structures, somewhat younger buildings with rare architectural merit are scattered throughout Theth, Kelmend, and Vermosh.
Theth, a land of discovery
The pristine natural sites around Theth make the village one of Albania's most visited tourism destinations, especially in summer. From vast meadows to canyons, caves and waterfalls, local natural resources attract not only vacationers but also seasoned athletes and scientists, including geographers and speleologists.
Spanning roughly 2 kilometers, the deep Grunas canyon offers a breathtaking setting. The Harapi and Bira e Rratheve caves conceal galleries and underground lakes. Many legends, passed down orally through generations, are associated with these caverns. The Thethi waterfall plunges from a height of 25 meters. It marks the Bloja mill, another attraction highly favored by tourists visiting Theth.
Theth also lends itself to winter vacations. Winter tourism in the mountains is indeed one of the country's strong points, though the offerings haven't yet been widely embraced by Albanians and international visitors. In winter, the Theth region stands out among other national destinations that rarely receive snowfall. A note for snow enthusiasts!
