Lake Koman

·

A 34 km² reservoir in northern Albanie, Lake Koman is crossed by ferry between limestone canyons and villages of the Albanian Alps.

Lake Koman stretches over 34 km² in northern Albanie, nestled between vertical limestone canyons often compared to Scandinavian fjords. The ferry crossing, between Fierza's maritime station and Koman's hydroelectric plant, offers one of the most direct ways to approach this mountainous region, which is difficult to access by road.

Why visit Lake Koman

Lake Koman appeals to three types of travelers. Landscape enthusiasts will find a continuous array of limestone walls, river mouths, and forested slopes, with no roads or power lines visible for long stretches. Hikers use it as a gateway to the Valbona Valley and the village of Theth, two flagship destinations in the Albanian Alps. Finally, those interested in Balkan wildlife can observe dense biodiversity in an environment where traditional villages survive on the margins of mainstream tourism.

The lake is not without challenges: in places, deposits of plastic bottles and debris form veritable floating islands, a consequence of waste accumulation carried downstream by the Drin and its tributaries. This reality is documented and worth knowing before your visit.

History of the lake and dam

Lake Koman is an artificial reservoir created between 1979 and 1988 on the Drin River in northern Albanie. It is fed by the Valbona and Shala rivers, which flow down from the Albanian Alps. Its creation involved flooding parts of valleys and displacing several hamlets, but it also opened up certain communities by making the ferry the most practical means of transport for reaching Fierza from the south.

Today, the lake serves both hydroelectric power generation, local supply, and passenger transport. Its width remains moderate—often less than 400 meters in the most enclosed sections—which accentuates the canyon effect while navigating.

What to see along the crossing

The ferry cruise

The ferry departs from Fierza's maritime station and reaches Koman's hydroelectric plant. The crossing lasts approximately four hours depending on stops. The boat first skirts forested hills, then enters between abrupt limestone cliffs. A narrow passage between two vertical rocky walls opens onto the Valbona Valley sector.

Kaurri Cave

A standard stop on the cruise, Kaurri Cave opens directly onto the lake. Weather permitting, some boats make a stop here for a brief visit.

Lake Koman House

A stone dwelling set in the middle of the reservoir, Lake Koman House serves as an inn. You can taste local raki and coffee, and it's possible to spend the night in traditional rooms. It's one of the few accommodations directly on the water.

Berbull village

Berbull is known for its kulla, traditional stone houses of the region. The village provides access to the Shala and Daica rivers, frequented in summer for swimming.

Fauna and birdlife

The slopes and shores are home to several mammal species:

  • Eurasian otter
  • European polecat
  • golden jackal
  • beech marten
  • red fox

Among birds, notably observed are kingfisher, gray heron, great spotted woodpecker, quail, and black-headed gull.

When to go

The ferry operates year-round, daily, but the experience varies significantly by season.

  • May to June: high water levels, dense vegetation, pleasant temperatures. Recommended period for scenery.
  • July to August: high season, ferry very busy, swimming possible. Booking in advance recommended.
  • September to October: autumn colors, reduced crowds, conditions still stable for hiking in Valbona or Theth.
  • November to March: ferry maintained, but often gray skies, some accommodations closed, and road access sometimes complicated by snow.

How to get to Lake Koman

Access to the lake is less straightforward than it appears, as it depends on which embarkation point you choose.

  • Koman side: the hydroelectric plant is reached by car or minibus from Shkodra (approximately 2-3 hours by road).
  • Fierza side: the town is connected by road to Bajram Curri to the north and Fushë-Arrëz to the south. In high season, taxis circulate between Fierza, Koman, and Breg-Lumi.
  • Classic combination: ferry from Koman to Fierza, then transfer to Valbona, hike over Valbona-Theth pass, and return via Shkodra. Allow 3 to 4 days.

Practical information

  • Crossing duration: approximately 4 hours, with the option of breaking it up over several days with an overnight stay.
  • Fare: moderate, payable in lek directly at embarkation.
  • Reservation: recommended in July-August, especially if you're traveling with a vehicle.
  • What to bring: water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat (strong glare on the water), a warm layer even in summer for the deck.
  • Complementary activities: kayaking, swimming in the Shala, hiking in Theth or Valbona.

Nearby

Lake Koman fits naturally into a coherent northern Albanie circuit. In Fierza, you'll find a large hydroelectric dam and some Roman ruins. The village of Berbull allows you to extend your stay along the Shala and Daica rivers. For those wishing to compare Albanie's major lakes, Lake Shkodra, more accessible and more open, offers a useful contrast. Further southeast, Germenj-Shelegur National Park completes a broader picture of the country's mountainous landscapes.
