Frasheri
Frasheri
In southern Albania, Frasheri preserves the memory of the Frashëri brothers, fathers of the National Movement. A mountain village off the beaten path.
Frasheri is the birthplace of Albanian intellectual elite. Once a pivotal hub of the country's political history, it is today a quiet, almost forgotten village. You won't find crowds here. The region remains largely unknown to tourists, making it ideal for a peaceful retreat immersed in nature.
History
Located in southern Albania, in the Permet district, Frasheri was first recorded in Ottoman registers in 1431–1432. At that time, the settlement consisted of only about a dozen houses. Households multiplied over time, and by the early twentieth century, the locality had become a small mountain village with approximately 550 dwellings.
Frasheri, a patriotic cradle
It was in Frasheri that the brothers Abdyl, Naim, and Sami Frashëri were born—crucial figures in the Albanian National Movement of the late nineteenth century. The village hosted the interprovincial assembly twice, notably in 1878 and 1880. During this period, Frasheri was an important political center not only for the Dangelli province, but for the entire country.
Frasheri today
Frasheri today is a peaceful place to recharge. Upon entering the village, you'll first encounter the charming house of the Frashëri brothers. The original building was destroyed in 1892; the current residence dates from 1974 and serves as a museum dedicated to the lives and works of these activists. The original architecture has been largely restored, except for a few elements that required modification. The apartments now feature wooden beams and ceilings. The fireplaces in the bedrooms have also been updated. As for the museum's collection, you can see books and manuscripts belonging to the Frashëri brothers. Among the most important documents are original publications by Sami Frashëri, including Turkish–French and French–Turkish dictionaries.
Wander through the silent streets that lend the place the atmosphere of an abandoned town. In reality, time seems to have stood still in Frasheri. The large school that once served as a gymnasium no longer functions. It was the first Albanian school in the Permet district. Today, all that remains are the names of the intellectuals who studied there.
A picturesque natural setting
The lush, towering mountains surrounding Frasheri and the small lake nearby inspire serenity. The region is a playground for adventure enthusiasts. Take a nature walk to refresh your spirit. Lounge in the meadows, organize an outdoor picnic, photograph the scenic landscapes, and more. If you wish to extend your getaway, visit the Bredhi i Hotova national park, considered the lungs of southern Albania. Amid the firs, leave your worries behind and fulfill your dreams of escape.
