A mountain village in the Skrapar region, Vlashnje preserves its vernacular stone architecture and panoramic views over the enclosed valleys of central Albania, near the Osum Gorges.

Vlashnje is a mountain village perched in the Skrapar region, in the heart of central Albania. Clinging to the heights overlooking the Osum Valley, it belongs to that network of traditional Albanian villages where stone architecture and rural ways of life have endured through time. Its isolated position makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the Osum Gorges and the wild landscapes of Skrapar.

What to See

The village preserves traditional houses built with dry stone, characteristic of Albanian vernacular architecture. Narrow streets, terraced agricultural plots, and sweeping views over the surrounding mountains compose the essence of the landscape. Mediterranean mountain vegetation—oak trees, wild olives, aromatic shrubs—surrounds the dwellings.

History and Context

Skrapar is a historically isolated region, which has preserved its traditions and rural architecture. During the Ottoman period, these mountain villages functioned as semi-autonomous communities. Under the Albanian communist regime (1944–1991), collectivization profoundly transformed rural life, and many of these villages experienced massive exodus after 1991. Vlashnje, like its neighbors, bears the marks of this history.
