Protected area of 150 hectares 10 minutes from Pogradec, on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid: shaded canals, Hoxha villa and local fish cuisine.

Drilon Park stretches across approximately 150 hectares about ten minutes from Pogradec, on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid. Often presented as a national park in tourism documentation, it is rather a protected area of modest size, structured around springs, canals and waterways that join the lake. The site combines shaded walks, local dining and a fragment of 20th-century Albanian history, through the former summer residence of Enver Hoxha.

Why visit Drilon

Three reasons make a stop worthwhile during a stay around Lake Ohrid. First, the network of canals fed by underground springs offers an unusual aquatic landscape for the region, lined with willows whose branches dip into the water. Next, the park provides direct access to Lake Ohrid, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1980 and shared between Albanie and North Macedonia. Finally, the Hoxha villa and the basilica present on the site add a cultural dimension to what is essentially a nature visit.

Compared to the larger and more alpine Llogara or Valbona parks, Drilon focuses on a short format: one to two hours of walking is enough to tour it, making it an ideal complement to a day in Pogradec.

Site history

Drilon owes part of its fame to the Albanian communist regime. During the Enver Hoxha period, the leader had a summer residence here, chosen for the coolness of the springs and the isolation of the place. The villa, which became a museum after the regime's fall, displays architecture that combines Ottoman and Albanian elements, with well-maintained gardens typical of official residences of the era.

The area also houses the remains of a Christian basilica associated with the 10th century, testimony to the Byzantine anchoring of the Ohrid shore. The medieval Christian presence in the region is widely documented, particularly on the side of the nearby village of Lin, and Drilon is part of this historical continuity.

What to see and do

Canals and vegetation

The heart of the park is crisscrossed by small navigable canals. Rowing boats and pedalos are available for rental, and allow you to move at a slow pace between the willows. The vegetation cover combines oaks, firs, poplars, pines and willows, creating dense shaded areas that are welcome in summer.

Wildlife

The site serves as a refuge for several species. Visitors regularly encounter white swans on the waterways, as well as geese, wild ducks and other aquatic birds. Land fauna includes foxes, peacocks and hares, more discreet but present in the protected area.

Hoxha villa and basilica

A visit to the former residence of Enver Hoxha, transformed into a museum, constitutes the main cultural highlight. The remains of the 10th-century basilica are located in the immediate vicinity, within the park's perimeter.

Local dining

Several restaurants and cafés are scattered throughout the park. The specialty to taste is tavë krapi or tavë korani, a dish of Lake Ohrid fish baked in the oven. The lake is home to an endemic trout species called pastrimka, frequently offered on menus. Preparations remain simple: grilled or baked fish, accompanied by seasonal vegetables.

Go-kart racing

A go-kart area is arranged in the western part of the park, an alternative for families seeking a more active activity.

How to get there

Drilon is located about 4 kilometers from central Pogradec, or about ten minutes by car via the road that hugs the southern shore of Lake Ohrid. From Tirana, allow approximately 3 hours of driving via the SH3 motorway then the SH75. Buses and minibuses (furgon) regularly connect Tirana to Pogradec; from Pogradec, a taxi or rental car is necessary to reach the park. The site is also accessible from Ohrid, on the Macedonian side, by crossing the border at Tushemisht.

To see nearby

The town of Pogradec itself deserves a stop for its lakeside promenade and fish restaurants. Further south, the Germenj-Shelegur National Park offers a contrast of mid-mountain forest landscapes. To extend the cultural stay, the Onufri National Museum of Iconography in Berat complements the discovery of Albanian religious heritage. On the Tirana side, the National History Museum provides an overall framework for the communist period mentioned at Drilon.
